Help us turn plastic bags into PLastic yArn (PLARN)
Volunteers collect, cut, loop then crochet or weave the plastic material into a mat. Mats create a barrier between the wet, dirty, and cold ground, as well as help retain body heat. One mat=600 bags.

Hey Friends, My mama is 87 and her health is starting to decline. She has been in the hospital for the last week in Conover, where she lives, and now she is in a skilled nursing facility for 12 days (what Medicare will cover). The doctors there are strongly encouraging her to move from the independent living (income based) apartment where she currently lives alone, to an Assisted Living facility. This is not something she will probably accept easily, as she is a very independent and stubborn woman. But, it would allow her a lot more socializing and it does seem like the right thing for her to do considering her declining health. I feel intuitively that if she's going to stay at a place that is covered by Medicare, that she should be near me so that I can stop in and check on her and ensure that they are giving her good care. I live in Wilmington. I've heard horror stories as a therapist, about the mistreatment of our seniors, by Medicare run establishments. Especially as she ages more and her health gets harder and harder for her to manage herself. My second choice would be for her to stay somewhere near Conover where she currently lives. But I would really only want that for her if we know of a place that's like an outstanding, awesome facility. And somehow I don't think that there will be as good places like that in that rural part of North Carolina as there will be in Wilmington. I may be wrong about that, but it's just my immediate sense. I am wondering if anyone here has any suggestions/feedback/warnings against any specific places. I could use all the help I can get here! Thanks in advance for your assistance!
